Start Doing – Stop Reading Self Help Books
July 14, 2010 by selfimprove
Continuously reading self help books is much like gathering a stash of holiday brochures and travel books about an exotic destination that you would love to visit. You’ve poured over photographs, read all the reviews, imagined yourself sipping a cocktail looking out over that breath-taking sunset, immersed yourself in the idea of being there. However, you’ve never got around to buying the ticket. What’s my point? Reading about how to achieve Please Login or Register to see the link. and actually doing what you’ve learned are two completely different things. Reading all those feel-good stories about how others have taken the required action and, as a consequence, changed their lives, may well give you that longing feeling inside. But tomorrow morning, when you drag yourself out of bed for another normal day, what has changed? Little or nothing! When wake up to another day of hassle, stress, financial worries or battered self-esteem, what good will all that reading have done you? If anything, you’ll find yourself even more restless and more disillusioned than you were at the outset.
Reading, understanding and intellectually appreciating what it takes to change your life will change nothing in your life until you put your learning into regular practice. And that’s just too big a hassle for so-called normal people – they’re fearful of taking what they perceive as some really risky leap of faith.
If you’ve been lucky enough to come across a self help book that gives you step-by-step instructions on how to change your life (and they’re few and far between – most of them are ‘feel-good books’) then you must know by now that you don’t have to leap into the great unknown. All you need to take is take small daily steps that will awaken you from the self-induced hypnosis in which most normal people are merely existing.
If you want to change your life, you’ve got to change the way you’re living the life that you have at present. You start small – by doing something as simple as changing your morning routine – because small things get your subconscious mind out of its comfort zone. Once out you will start to understand that absolutely everything in your life can be done differently. When this realization hits you, you’re going to find yourself in a completely different place – where action that was otherwise unconscionable suddenly become obvious – and easily doable.
In fact, it’s you who has to start doing the things that will Please Login or Register to see the link., to stop reading and start doing.
To Get More Out Of Life You’ve Got To Change Your Life!
July 11, 2010 by selfimprove
Most of us Please Login or Register to see the link.. I don’t mean that you’re unhappy with what you have. In fact, the secret to happiness is already having what you want. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t want to scale higher heights of happiness because there is no standing still in life.
And, then, of course, there are those who are desperately unhappy with their situation – the majority of people claim to be unhappy in their job, a frightening number of people worry about their finances and then there are people who are just downright unhappy with who they are.
However, you will get precious little out of life by wanting or by being dissatisfied with what you think you currently have or have not. The one thing that is stopping you getting something different out of life is – and this is kind of obvious – that you tend to do everything the same. Keep doing the same things and nothing’s ever going to change. If you want change in your life, you’re going to have to do actually change your life!
What are you to do? Like all great journeys, changing your life starts with the first step. A small step will suffice because you’re going to have to gradually recondition your mind – to get yourself used to the idea that, in every single thing that you do in life, you have a choice to do something new, something different. One of the most powerful exercises that I offer to my Please Login or Register to see the link. clients is that they use the very routine that has them stuck in their rut to dismantle the habitual, repetitive patterns of behaviour that have so constrained them, their view of life and the boundless possibilities that life holds for them.
I offer the same powerful yet simple tip to you. Break routine by using your routine. Each morning, you will find yourself with a long list of little chores that you’ve done in a routine way all of your adult life. However, if you do something as simple as brushing your teeth with the hand that you don’t normally use, you will achieve two, potentially Please Login or Register to see the link., milestones. Firstly, you will have awoken yourself to the obvious truth that, in every single thing that you do in your life, you have a choice. This awareness will enable you break every single destructive habit that has been holding you back from the life that you really want. Secondly, by virtue of the fact that you will be brushing your teeth differently, you’ll have to pay more attention to the task. Highly successful people call this ‘focus’. Focus just means paying attention – not to what you want out of life, but to what you’re doing right now.
Your life is lived in moments – every moment that you pay attention develops your ability to be fully focused, fully aware of what needs to be done when the big decisions in life call for real action – not the routine reaction of the normal doomed-to-failure mind.
Self-Help: Are You Fooling Yourself?

With the huge growth in sales of self improvement books and the proliferation of Please Login or Register to see the link., wouldn’t you think that you would by now have witnessed a major shift in human awareness – a demonstrable improvement in the human condition? In fact it’s not just that there little evidence of improvement, all the evidence points to the opposite – increased levels of anxiety and worry as the economy nosedived having been hijacked by a small number of people obsessed with their own greed; a rise in anti-social behaviour and violent crime and the ongoing inappropriate behaviour of people who should know better on the international stage of so-called diplomacy and politics.
So, what are all those people who are indulging in Please Login or Register to see the link. doing? Actually, in the course of my work I speak to or meet quite a few of them and, undoubtedly, whilst some are taking major leaps forward in their lives, there are many who, as in every other facet of their lives, are going through the motions, fooling themselves into thinking that their mental state, attitude, behaviour and lives are being transformed.
It’s very simple to pursue a Please Login or Register to see the link. and slip into a routine not dissimilar to all your other routines – habitual, repetitive, automatic and ultimately mindless. The minute anything becomes routine, it becomes useless to you in creating a better life. And, so, I encounter many people who have convinced themselves that they are developing their mindfulness – but who have ended up doing something else mindlessly! I’ve met plenty of people who meditate, who tell me that they’ve never felt as calm and focused in their lives – but, if they were to take one step back and take a look, they would discover that their lives are crumbling around them.
If you have embarked on the journey of self improvement you should immediately notice positive results in your everyday life. If you see no tangible results or benefits in terms of both personal effectiveness and the downstream benefits in your professional, personal and financial life, you are fooling yourself. And the longer you fool yourself the more dangerous it becomes – because you will convince yourself that your life is changing for the better when, in fact, you are becoming more divorced from the real world.
There are hugely useful and practical personal development resources around – but they are tools that have to be put to the appropriate use. They must be used during the minute to minute rough and tumble of your day – not just whilst you’re sitting in the lotus position at seven o’clock in the morning! Mindfulness – and all that flows from it – is something that must be practiced within the day – not in preparation for it. Until you bring what you’ve learned in your personal development courses and self-help books into the very moment to moment behaviour of your daily life not only will things not improve, they’ll get worse.
Changing Your Life: It’s All Down To You

A friend recently suggested one of his best-loved self-help books to me – it was the latest in a growing list of recommended reading. In talking with him, I enquired as to how he was progressing putting into practice his learning from all his reading. I discovered that, in fact, he was a life-long student of self improvement but was unlikely to ever actually take the plunge. He informed me that a friend of his had suggested to him that he “stop reading the bloody books and starting doing it!”
Bookshop shelves groan with Please Login or Register to see the link. books. It’s big business – apparently the fastest growing niche of the publishing market. Also, personal development websites proliferate – offering all manner of inducements to purchase their package which is guaranteed to change your life in five minutes!
None of these websites, packages or books will change your life. They may well point you in the right direction, provide you with an understanding that was missing your range of experience or knowledge or suggest concrete tips on how to get more out of life, change your life, transform yourself or whatever. no doubt about it, there is some top-class stuff available – and some innovative and Please Login or Register to see the link. help – but it will be no use to you until you put it into practice for yourself and keep putting it into practice.
Only you can Please Login or Register to see the link.. Only you can grab control of that awesome inner power that is simply waiting for you to muster up the courage or energy to unleash it. The interesting thing is that most of the advice provided by websites or books demands very little work of you, demands that you make only very minor alterations to the manner in which you use your mind. Sadly, however, having been in this business for nearly fifteen years, I have seen far too many people who will not take five minutes every day to make the other twenty three hours and fifty five minutes so much better.
And this leads me to the main point – one that I’ve already alluded to – you have to keep putting what you learn into practice. No book, program or package will change your life in five minutes. You won’t change your life in five minutes. However, five minutes every day is an entirely different matter – if you make or take the time to make sure that your mind is up to speed each morning then your life will change beyond all recognition. Psychology tells us in no uncertain terms that normal people only perceive what they expect to perceive and experience only what they expect to experience – that the normal life is created by the sadly blind normal mind. Open your mind each morning, change your expectations and you will change your life. But, at the end of the day, it’s entirely up to you – no one else is going to do it for you.
Achieving Success – Waiting For Something To Happen?
June 8, 2010 by selfimprove
Most people are going through each day wishing, hoping, wanting or holding out for something to change. “I wish I could just get that lucky break.” “I hope that tomorrow will be better.” “I want to win the Lottery!” Unfortunately, what all these people don’t realize is that nothing “just happens” in life – you have to do what you have to do yourself to set things in motion. To make matters worse, there are just too many Please Login or Register to see the link. out there that give the impression that, to get abundant success, all you have to do is believe. As a result, I’ve met more than a couple of people over the years who have convinced themselves that they believe in in the achievement of their goal and, having convinced themselves, they now believe that all they have to do is relax and wait for it to happen. That’s just like believing that you’re going to win the Lottery but not bothering to buy a ticket!
It is you who makes things happen in your life – you’re the one who will Please Login or Register to see the link.. You must get up of your backside and do the brave and courageous things that the normal person wouldn’t dream of doing – that’s why they’re normal, not-too-uncomfortable, not-too-bad on the mundane sorry-go-round of their ordinary everyday existence. And that is why highly successful people are highly successful – they’ve done what had to be done, taken the brave and courageous decisions, thrown themselves wholeheartedly into getting what they want out of life.
You do realize that there’s nothing brave or courageous about doing the things that will lead you towards what you truly believe in – what would be viewed as courage or bravery by normal not-too-bad people is just the obvious and logical thing to do for those who believe and are driven to succeed. But what action do you need to take? Well, for starters – and this is pretty damn obvious – if you Please Login or Register to see the link., you’re going to have to do something different. You don’t have to do something outlandishly different – start with something small, you’ll be intrigued where it will take you. By small, I mean something as apparently insignificant as brushing your teeth with the other hand! Yeah, you heard me – you’ve read that sentence correctly! Doing something this small in a different way will destroy the habit of an adult lifetime – the habit of doing all routine things automatically. When you break down little habits, you re-set your mind to take a totally different view of absolutely everything that’s going on – you’ll begin to notice opportunities that were there already – you just didn’t see them.
But what if you’ve already done something brave or courageous and it failed? Didn’t you know – only losers give up! Statistics show that the most successful people in sport, business or politics, take failure in their stride, see it as a new opportunity to go at it again. After all, if you really want your life to change, you’re not going to quit that easily, are you?
What Good Will A Personal Development Course Do You?
May 26, 2010 by selfimprove
The short answer to the question is “none!” – unless, of course, you put what you’ve learned into practice. Unfortunately, that’s where most of us fall down. Sure, they spent a day or two and it was great, they felt invigorated, uplifted, ready to change their world. But research has shown that it takes approximately six weeks for the benefits of the average training course to vanish – completely – and Please Login or Register to see the link. is no exception.
Why? Because it’s easier to stay the same – it’s less hassle to continue being “not too bad” when everybody around you is not too bad as well. It’s less hassle to not have your friends – or, as some of my Please Login or Register to see the link. clients have told me, their nearest and dearest – looking at you as if you’re some kind of born-again weirdo! It’s simpler to fit in. And, it doesn’t matter what new learning we take on board, sooner or later, to a greater or lesser extent, we revert to type, we revert to our default settings, we go back to being normal. But normal is crazy – there’s seven decades of research that proves that. And not-too-bad is simply not good enough when you consider the life that you could have – effortless happiness, effortless success, peace of mind.
So, how will you change your life? Because, you need to understand, if you want you life to change, you’re the one who’s going to have to do something new, something different. Don’t pay any attention to anyone who will tell you that you can Please Login or Register to see the link. – they want to make a fast buck. Pay no attention to anyone who will tell you that success is all about making cart-loads of money – they’re the ones who want loads of money and some of it is yours! Don’t listen to people who keep recommending the latest wonderful book that they’ve just read to you – you won’t change your life by reading – you only change your life by doing.
What have you got to do? You change your life by doing things in your life differently. You start with little things – like try brushing your teeth with the hand that you don’t habitually use – then your mind will get used to the idea that, in every single thing that you do in your life and in every single situation in which you find yourself in your life – you have a choice. You have a choice – can choose to live automatically and mindlessly like all the other normal crazy morons that are happy being not-too-bad, or you can choose to focus on the present, feel the toothbrush’s bristles on your teeth, notice how differently you’re holding the brush, taste the toothpaste. It’s in the minute detail of the normal that you will find reality. And when you discover reality, you will discover that you can, indeed, achieve effortless success and happiness because, in reality, it simply happens.
