The ego and mind are treacherous machines run amuck. Between them, they can take a simple memory or theme and create such a torturous scenario that it would require the tenacity and courage of a K2 ascent, to disarm it. Actually, the mind itself is simply an automaton which endlessly spews forth thoughts, over which we have no control. It is the ego which fuels and feeds on the emotional charge of the deluge.
