Why Some People Are Afraid Of Setting Goals
June 5, 2010 by selfimprove
When I say the words “goal setting”, many people twinge. setting goals means that they will have to be accountable for accomplishing them. Let’s face it. Most people don’t want to set a goal because they are afraid they won’t accomplish it and they will have failed. No one wants to fail. So if they don’t set a goal they will never fail. Are you one of those people? Be Honest. I used to be.
What I have learned is that the only failure I ever had was a failure to set and accomplish any real goal. One day I woke up and I hadn’t accomplished anything I had wanted to. I dreamed about all the things I would do someday, but I hadn’t done any of them. Someday just never comes. Think back, how many of your dreams have you put on a shelf, because you were afraid to pursue them in the small chance you may fail?
I overcame this fear and so can you. How did I do this, you ask? First came the realization that I was worth it. You’re worth it too. Then came the work. Don’t get scared now. It’s not hard. I’ll show you how easy it really is. I’ll tell you what I did to get the ball rolling and I promise you, you can do the same.
After realizing I was worth it, I wrote down on a piece of paper all the things I wanted to accomplish. All my dreams put on paper in black and white. It didn’t matter how big or small. It didn’t matter how silly they may have seemed to anyone else. This list was just for me.
Some Things From My List
Buy a house
Reconnect with old friends
Find a Life Partner
Start My own Website
Travel
Take a hot air balloon ride
Write a book
Buy a business suit (I’ve always wanted one)
These are just a few things from my list of over a hundred things. I haven’t done everything on the list yet, but I am on my way.
Once the list was written, I found one of them I could accomplish that day. So, I sent out greeting cards to some friends and had some people over for dinner. Guess what? I also found the love of my life at that dinner. We had known each other since we were 18. Go figure!
Then I picked out a goal that would be a little harder and I broke it down into tiny little steps, created a goal chart and picked one of those steps I could do right now. Buying a house seemed like a long shot. I was out of work at the time, but it wouldn’t hurt to see what my credit report looked like. Now, I had a place to start. I made a few phone calls and got some medical bills reduced and even some of them removed from my credit all together. I got a job, called a real estate agent and talked to a loan officer to see what the next steps would be. A year later, I had bought my first house. I got that business suit too. Bought it at a thrift store for 10 bucks. I started my own website and now I have two.
The amazing thing was once I accomplished a couple very doable goals, I felt energized and it was easier to conquer the bigger ones. Setting goals was now fun. If you focus on the little steps, the things you can do today, the rest will come. So, do just a little something today and tomorrow you will start to see your dreams coming true.
I knew goal setting had changed my life, because my outbound message on my cell phone for the last 8 years had said, “I’m out living life and chasing dreams“. Recently I had both my mom and my partner tell me it was time to change that message to something like , “I’m out living my dreams and making things happen“. What is your outbound message? Does it need a change?
